Fullerton Arboretum: What to Expect (2024)

Tucked in the corner of Cal State Fullerton’s campus, along Yorba Linda Boulevard is the Fullerton Arboretum, which we’ve dubbed #1 on our list of OC botanical gardens.

The Fullerton Arboretum is one of the best things to do in Fullerton: wonderful for a day-date or even families (they’re stroller-friendly).

Hours: Open every day except Tuesdays from 9am-4pm

Parking: free, located right in front of the entrance

*While admission is free, donations are recommended and greatly appreciated.

There are four major collections at the arboretum:

  • Cultivated

  • Woodlands

  • Mediterranean

  • Desert

Perhaps the most recognizable part of the property is the Heritage House. This was originally located in downtown Fullerton but was moved to the arboretum for preservation.

One of the things we love about the Fullerton Arboretum is the numerous benches they’ve installed throughout the property. For those who like to meditate, or just be in nature, this is a nice place to sit and enjoy the view.

Many gazebos like this on the property offer some shade

One of the most beautiful scenes at the Fullerton Arboretum is this pond. If you look closely in the bottom left quarter of the photo, you can see a bunch of turtle heads poking out of the water!

There is so much wildlife you can observe in this 26-acre space. During our visit we saw:

  • Ducks

  • Birds

  • Turtles

  • Fish

  • Squirrels

Fortunately, we didn’t run into any coyotes but there are warning signs about them on the property (read more about coyotes in Orange County)

Mojave Desert Garden

One of my favorite collections at the Fullerton Arboretum is the Mojave Desert Garden.

Check out that cholla cactus in the middle!
