Most of what we know as Orange County contains dense housing, commercial centers, freeways, and parks. But tucked away in a shady canyon in the area of Silverado, is a truly spectacular historic property maintained by OC Parks called the Modjeska House.

Here, you can imagine what life was like in Orange County during a much simpler time.

Who was Helena Modjeska?

Helena Modrzejewska was a famous actress in the 1800s of Polish origin. She came to America and lived briefly in the city of Anaheim, before touring the United States and eventually settling in Silverado Canyon.

The Origins of Arden

The original structure on the property was owned by a man named Joseph Pleasants.

When Modjeska and her husband Karol Bozenta purchased the property, they commissioned architect Stanford White to design the ranch. They named it Arden after the Forest of Arden in the Shakespearean play, As You Like it.
